Two long-running Canadian coffee companies are joining forces in metro Vancouver, B.C., as Artigiano is acquiring Richmond-based Salt Spring Coffee.

Artigiano, founded in 1999 as Caffè Artigiano, said the acquisition makes it Canada’s second-largest roaster of organic-certified coffee.

The Vancouver-based coffee company, which currently operates 17 retail locations in B.C., plus one in Calgary, Alberta, recently told Vancouver is Awesome that it plans to expand to 30 cafes by the end of June, mostly in metro Vancouver.

While Artigiano also offers direct-to-consumer coffee sales and wholesale sales, the acquisition of Salt Spring vastly expands its coffee offerings. Primarily focused on roasting, with no retail cafes of its own, Salt Spring has focused on environmental and social sustainability within its coffee sourcing program. The company was the first in Canada to bring Regenerative Organic Certified coffee to market.

Now based in Richmond, Salt Spring Coffee was founded in 1999 by Robbyn Scott and Mickey McLeod.

“Joining forces with Artigiano is a natural progression for us,” McLeod said in an announcement from Artigiano. “Artigiano’s commitment to premium quality, thoughtful sourcing, and deep community connections aligns perfectly with the values that have guided Salt Spring Coffee since day one.”

The financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.
